The Big Question at ASGA 2011

Conference season has begun my fellow student lifers and leaders, and ASGA’s National Leadership Summit is always the Fall solstice that really kicks it off for me. Nothing is like ASGA because the conference is full of new faces with new ideas, reminding us of where we all came from.  At the same time, it is also interspersed with old friends we see, year after year, rooting on their campus leaders in genuinely dedicated support.  ASGA is always an eclectic and diverse crowd, so the conversations usually range in topic, however this year we found a consistent theme. Student leaders were walking up and asking us how they could be more visible to their student body.

OrgSync with Syracuse University Let me stop here for a second because this is a big shift from what we are usually asked.  Nine times out of ten, student leaders and administrators ask:  How can we communicate better with our students?  These questions usually turn into a discussion about communication methods and targeting messages to students.  This year’s question was very different. Student leaders were focused on how they could make “seeing” the campus, even when off campus, part of their students’ day-to-day routine.  The truth is, email does work, for those that have the habit of reading all of their emails.  However, the habits of students have changed and these leaders were acutely aware of the reality of that shift.  We discussed how OrgSync can help with visibility on these campuses but frankly, we were excited to meet so many individuals thinking outside of the box. These conversations were a testament to the fact that students can still exact real change on their campuses.  Our discussions felt like breakthroughs at every turn, and we cannot thank our friends enough, old and new, for adding to the thought leadership of higher education with us. Until next year!!
