At the New Game Conference in San Francisco today, keynote speaker Richard Hilleman spoke on the key challenges facing HTML5 and what steps should be taken to optimize the platform for games. Richard Hilleman is the Chief Creative Director of EA and has worked on titles such as the first Madden, NHL, and Tiger Woods. Hilleman noted that the greatest strength of HTML5 is the quick and easy access to games. He states that, “increasingly, the thing [developers are] looking for from a customer isn’t their money — it’s their time. People only give us their attention when we give them their time effectively.” A notable weakness of HTML5 is its performance. Running a demo of 3D animation on his second generation Macbook Air proved slow results. He explained that “high performance Javascript is obtuse at best,” so it’s hard to predict how a given app will run on a given hardware specification. In his keynote address, Hilleman continued to outline a checklist for developers to utilize when employing HTML5 as a platform for gaming. Hilleman’s checklist includes:

Clearing performance standards Distribution, Monetization Communication Quality Killer App Development, With a Bit of Magic
