GameSalad Direct – Feed Your Inner Game Designer

October 12 2010, 8:12am

Last week at GDC Online 2010, GameSalad announced a brand new publishing business service, designed around the continuation of democratizing game design. Gone are the days of annual memberships and high-cost annual dues. Gone are the days of tiered memberships where some get more functionality than others. With today’s announcement, GameSalad is now, truly, for everyone. In 2009 we democratized game creation. In 2010, we’re democratizing game publishing. GameSalad is moving into the world of mobile game publishing. There will no longer be Express or Pro accounts offered and everyone will get the full set of features, previously available only to those with Pro-level memberships. The move into publishing is part of our introduction of GameSalad Studio, which includes GameSalad Creator as well a redesigned GameSalad Viewer, and GameSalad Direct, the new publishing system. In addition, GameSalad Creator will remain entirely free to download, and will be entirely free to use. Under the new model, there is no subscription, and no fees until creators choose to publish their games. This new pricing structure allows for an even lower barrier for entry to independent game developers, and also eliminates the need to have an Apple iPhone developer account. In 1982 Adobe freed desktop publishing from the age old print shops and ushered in the era of the graphic designer. We’re doing the same for game designers. We’ll have a lot more details and news on the new GameSalad Studio in the days leading up to it’s release. This is only the beginning.
